The Day of Water Workers of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstandin suu charba kyzmatkerlerinin kunu) is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
The holiday was established by Decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic dated June 5, 1995 №225, taking into account the proposal of teams of organizations and enterprises of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Kyrgyz Republic, taking into account that water supply to sectors of the national economy is the most important factor in the development of the republic’s economy.
Previously, since 1981, this holiday in the USSR was celebrated as Land Reclamation Day.
The Kyrgyz Republic has significant reserves of water resources: about 45 billion cubic meters per year of surface river flow, 13 billion cubic meters of potential groundwater reserves, 1,745 billion cubic meters of lake water and 650 billion cubic meters of glaciers.
More than 3,000 rivers and streams flow in the republic, which belong to the seven main — basins of the Syrdarya River, the Amu Darya River, the Chu River, the Talas River, the Ili River, the Tarim River and Lake Issyk-Kul. More than 90% of crop production is grown on irrigated land, the so-called gold fund, which occupies a significant place in the country's economy.
Currently, significant work is underway to develop new lands, supply water to irrigated lands, improve the reclamation condition, and provide settlements of the republic with clean drinking water.
The republic's water management system employs about 6 thousand people, including engineers and workers. On their professional holiday, they receive congratulations from friends and colleagues.
