International Cinema Day (28/12)

International Cinema Day — is a holiday for filmmakers — workers of this amazing art — and its lovers around the world.

On December 28, 1895, in Paris, at the «Grand Cafe» on Boulevard des Capucines, the first session of the Lumiere brothers' cinematography took place. It was this date that became the day of celebration of International Cinema Day.

A little earlier, in the same 1895, the French Auguste and Louis Lumiere received a patent for the «Cinema» device they invented. On March 22, 1895, the brothers organize the first ever film show in Paris. They show — so far only to a narrow circle of friends — short tape «Workers leaving the Lumiere» plant.

But cinema’s birthday is considered to be December 28, 1895, when the world’s first short film, «The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat» Station, was presented to the general public in the Lumiere cafe in Paris. It was the first film in the history of cinema to be shown to the public for money. By the way, his demonstration caused real panic among the audience: they jumped up from their seats and ran away from the hall, fearing that the train approaching on the screen would crush them…

Improving filming and projection techniques contributed to the emergence of new artistic shooting techniques and an increase in the duration of films. The approach to directing and acting techniques has changed qualitatively, cinema genres have begun to form, their artistic originality and a specific set of visual techniques have taken shape. Studios and cinemas began to open en masse in all countries of the world.

In Russia, the first film premiered on October 15, 1908. It was a film «Ponise FreeWheel» directed by Vladimir Romashkov based on a folk song about Stenka Razin «Because of the island on the line». The first Russian film lasted only seven minutes.

Since then, cinema has come a long way in development and has undergone major changes: from silent cinema to sound, from black and white to color, from film to digital. And, as you know, films come in different genres: scientific, documentary, journalistic, artistic. And today many different film festivals are held all over the world: Moscow International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, «Berlinale», Lumiere Brothers Festival, «Oscar» and others.

Also, different countries of the world have their own National Cinema Days. For example, Russian Cinema Day is celebrated annually on August 27.
