Maroon Day in Jamaica (06/01)

On January 6, Jamaica celebrates Maroon Day. This holiday is dedicated to the birthday of Captain Cudjoe, who was a maroon (maroons — maroons — freedom fighters who repelled attacks by British colonial troops). Kujoie was victorious over the English army.

After this, through his mediation, a peace treaty with Britain was concluded in 1738. This treaty guaranteed freedom for slaves and substantial land holdings.

Today, on this day, the descendants of former slaves pay tribute to the Maroons. Jamaicans do not forget that thanks to the Maroons, many of their ancestors were freed and were able to hide in Jamaica.

Festivals are held in honor of the holiday, the integral attributes of which are traditional dances, singing and rituals. Some island residents call this holiday «maroon Christmas».
