Today is the founding day celebrated by the capital of Peru and the largest city in the country, — Lima, which is also the 5th largest city in Latin America after Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.
This city on the Pacific coast of South America was named the city of kings (La Ciudad de los Reyes). When the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 18, 1535, he considered this place extremely unfriendly and did not imagine that this city would become the political and military capital of Peru, would see the rule of 40 viceroys and would be declared the capital of independent Peru in 1821.
It was here that the majestic cathedrals and luxurious mansions of the Spanish nobility were erected, the palace of the viceroy and much that gave Lima a unique charm of past colonial times, which exists to this day.
In 1988, the historical center of Lima was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List because the city retained its architecture from the colonial period.

Today Lima is the industrial and financial center of Peru, where most of the nation's companies of the state are founded. Lima is home to more than two-thirds of Peru's industrial production, as well as most of the service sector.
