In independent Kyrgyzstan, Border Guard Day (Kyrgyzstandin Chegarachysynn Kunu), celebrated on May 28, was first established by Decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic № 696 of December 15, 1999, in order to form the traditions of the border service of the Kyrgyz Republic, promote its significance and ensure continuity.

The holiday dates back to Soviet times, when it was established in 1958. And the historical event that became the basis for choosing the date of the holiday was the establishment by Decree of the Council of People's Commissars on May 28, 1918 of the Border Guard of the RSFSR.

On May 23, 2003, by Decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic № 303, the celebration of Border Guard Day on May 28 was canceled, and a new date — was set for October 29.

Having celebrated twice the Day of the Border Guard of the Kyrgyz Republic on October 29, on the basis of the Resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic dated May 26, 2005 № 296-III, taking into account the appeal of veterans of the border service of the Kyrgyz Republic, in order to continue the established traditions of border guards and to further form the traditions of the border service of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Government decided to return the historical date — to May 28.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, issues of protecting external borders, in particular the Kyrgyz-Chinese border, were delegated to the border troops of the Russian Federation.
