International Porridge Day (10/10)

October annually becomes the month when International Porridge Day is celebrated. The traditional dish of the cuisines of many peoples of the world has continued to remain popular for more than a thousand years.

This is precisely what determined the appearance of this wonderful holiday. It does not have official status, and the date of its holding on the Internet is indicated as different – October 10 or 11. One way or another, October united all lovers of porridge –, a traditional dish of many nations. In the culture of the Russian people, in their culinary traditions, porridge occupies a special place. The saying «Shchi and porridge – food our» was no coincidence.

It is generally accepted that the holiday originated in Great Britain, where the tradition of preparing and eating oatmeal is still strong. There is information that it was first held in 2009 for the charitable purpose of helping a center that helps starving children in poor countries. It was porridge –, a product based on boiling the cereal of a particular cereal crop, that was chosen by the Mary` Meals center as the dish to which the holiday was dedicated.

It is porridge, or rather the cereal from which it is cooked, that is one of the simplest and most common dishes growing in various parts of the world. Somewhere, porridge is simply the basis of the diet. Thus, it can prevent the threat of hunger.

The ability to make porridge from a wide variety of cereals and vegetables, which in turn range from north to south, has made porridge perhaps the most famous dish in the world. It is prepared from cereals such as: oatmeal, buckwheat, pearl barley, rice, barley, millet, semolina, wheat, corn. The predominance of this or that porridge in the diet of various peoples is due to what cereal crops grew in the territory where the people lived. Over time, a whole tradition of preparing porridge developed in the culture of different peoples, and certain preferences were formed.

Various events are held in different countries in honor of Porridge Day. Thus, a porridge preparation championship is being held in the UK (founded long before the establishment of the holiday). Other countries host quizzes, master classes on preparing porridge, competitions, competitions in preparing porridge or eating it. Many restaurants and cafes include a variety of porridges on the menu and offer their visitors a variety of porridges on this day.

We should not forget that many porridges, being tasty, nutritious food, make up the diet of dietary and baby food. For children, porridge becomes one of those dishes with which the child begins to become familiar with food.

Many events dedicated to International Porridge Day are charitable in nature, and the funds raised from them are directed to funds to help starving children and fight hunger.
