Gelageza or Monday on a hill ( Lunes del Cerro ) — is a holiday that takes place on one of the Mondays of July. It is dedicated to the indigenous peoples of Mexico and is an important cultural event for the region.
Like many other holidays in Mexico, Helagec does not do without alcohol. Oaxaca — the only place in Mexico where they prepare a special variety of tequila, a mescal drink. As part of the holiday, a competition is held to select the queen — goddess Centeotl ( Indian goddess of corn ). Girls from all regions of Oaxaca participate in the competition. The winner is chosen not only for beauty, but also for knowledge of local history, costumes and traditions.
