What is not a single Russian feast without? That's right, no herring. There is an opinion that herring — is a native Russian delicacy. But this is far from the case. Real admirers and admirers of this fish live in Finland.
Every year, in early October, all admirers of the Finnish delicacy — herring come to Helsinki for the annual Baltic Herring Festival, which lasts several days.
The fair takes place on the city's Market Square, where herring from this year's last catch is transported in huge quantities. You can try the fish salted, lightly salted, marinade, mustard, and sauce.
In addition to food, the fair sells products from various crafts, woolen clothing, and also selects the best pickled herring of the year.
This fish market in Helsinki (Baltic Herring Market in Helsinki), or, as the Finns themselves call it, the «fish fair», has existed since 1743 and has a rich history.
The license to hold the fair was issued by Swedish Royal Decree in Finland as part of the Turku Peace Treaty of 1743. Over the years, the fair has become an important event, determining the price of salted and pickled fish throughout Finland.
