Limassol Wine Festival ( Wine Festival in Limassol ) — is a grand holiday-festival of wine, held since 1961 and lasting about 10 days. The summer heat gradually subsides, the sun covers everything around with heat, and the fine aroma of grapes — graceful time is captured in the air!
Wine is perhaps the most sacred drink of the Ancient World, prepared in Cyprus according to ancient traditions. Winemakers carefully keep the recipes for making Cypriot wines, and keep them in the strictest secret. It is noteworthy that almost every mountain village has its own original recipe.
Paphos ( Paphos ), the ancient capital of Cyprus, is still proud of its skilled mosaics left to us, descendants, so that we can enjoy their beauty and be surprised at the skill of ancient masters. Among the outlandish mosaics there is one that depicts the myth of creating wine. By the way, the history of the emergence of winemaking began with a bad incident.
It was during the time of Dionysus, who is commonly called the god of wine ( Dionysus the God of Wine ), and especially fun feasts. According to legend, for the generous hospitality of King Ikarios, Dionis decided to thank him. He did not come up with anything better than teaching him winemaking — the secrets of a solid grape harvest and wine preparation. The king was delighted with such a valuable gift, and, quickly mastering all the skills necessary for a real winemaker, he decided to treat everyone with his own « product ».
The first tasters were shepherds. Instantly fluttering from an unfamiliar drink, they fell to the ground, causing fear and crushing of others and hatred of the king, who they thought poisoned them with potion. Without hearing any excuses, the witnesses of this incident killed the king, and, after a few hours, the shepherds woke up and, as if nothing had happened, continued their affairs, adopting the not yet entirely clear, but nice « craft ».
Unlike the summer beer festival, which also famous for the city of Limassol, the wine festival takes place exclusively with a national flavor. The sounds of ( a national string instrument similar to a house or Russian balalaika ) merge with the singing of famous sand and friendly claps, knocking out a clear rhythm for all dancers.
Among the aroma of grapes pouring in the air, professionals, and everyone who little-dumbly understands the intricacies of viticulture, capture various grape varieties. Throughout the festival, the flow of guests wishing to try the — wine does not dry out, especially since at certain hours « grape vine » can be tasted completely for free.
In addition, everyone can participate in the preparation of « divine » drink. During the festival, the picture becomes familiar when people, having rolled their trousers, become into vats with grapes and to the cheerful exclamations of the public and national music trample on fresh grapes, squeezing juice from it, which will eventually turn into wine.
