Professional holiday Day of Prosecutor's Office Workers (Ukrainian. The Day of Procurator's Offices, celebrated in Ukraine annually on December 1, is established by Decree of the President of the country № 1190/2000 of November 2, 2000, taking into account the role of the prosecutor's office in strengthening the rule of law, protecting human and civil rights, as well as the contribution of prosecutors to the formation of Ukraine as a rule of law state.
Historically, the formation of the legal system, and with it the determination of the functions of the prosecutor's office on the territory of modern Ukraine, began in the 16th century. In 1578, the Lutsk Tribunal — was formed at the Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the country's highest court. The following year, 1579, the Ukrainian Tribunal was formed in Baturin, which consisted of seven departments. The deputies of the tribunal annually elected a prosecutor (instigator), who monitored the procedure for filing claims in court. The position of prosecutor continued into the 17th century. The prosecutor also sat in the Ukrainian Tribunal along with the hetman and other senior officials.
In 1722, Peter I established a state body to supervise compliance with the legal activities of central and local government bodies. The Tsarist Imperial Prosecutor's Office, which included the prosecutor's office of Ukraine, existed until October 1917.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the Prosecutor's Office was founded in the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR), and then the Central Council adopted Law «On the creation of prosecutorial supervision in Ukraine».
Since Ukraine was declared a sovereign and independent state, a new stage in the development of the prosecutor's office has begun. After the adoption and entry into force of the Law of Ukraine «On the Prosecutor's Office» and a number of other regulations on December 1, 1991, a legal framework for the organization and activities of the prosecutor's office of independent Ukraine was created.
In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of Ukraine, the functions of the prosecutor's office correspond, first of all, to the position of forming the rule of law.
