Celebration in honor of the icon of the Mother of God, called «Quench my sorrow» (07/02)

Today, the Russian Orthodox Church honors the icon of the Mother of God, called «Quench my sorrow». On this icon of God, the Mother of God is depicted holding the Child Christ with her right hand, in whose hands a scroll is unfurled with the words: «Judge righteous judgment, do mercy and bounties to your sincere; do not abuse a widow and a sire, and do not create anger in your brother’s heart». The Mother of God had her left hand to Her head, somewhat tilted to one side, as if she listened to the prayers of everyone who addressed Her in sorrows and sorrows.

The icon of the Mother of God, called «Quench my sorrow», was brought to Moscow by the Cossacks in 1640 and placed in the Church of St. Nicholas on the Pupysh in Zamoskvorechye. Due to repeated reconstruction of the temple, the icon ended up on the bell tower.

The veneration of the icon as miraculous began after the relaxed woman was healed from it. The patient, who lived far from Moscow, suffered from a serious illness for many years: all members of her body, especially her legs, hurt so much that she could not walk. Brought to complete exhaustion by the disease, she no longer hoped to recover. Various medical remedies no longer brought her the desired healing.

One day, when the patient was in oblivion, she saw the icon of the Mother of God and heard a voice from her: « Take yourself to Moscow. There in Pupyshev, in the Church of St. Nicholas, there is an image of «Quench my sorrow»; pray in front of him and you will receive healing».

In Moscow, the patient examined all the icons in the church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, but did not find the one that appeared to her in a vision. Then the priest asked to bring the dilapidated icons that were there from the bell tower. When they brought in the icon « Quench my sorrow», the patient suddenly screamed: «She! She!» — and crossed herself. After the prayer service, she venerated the icon and stood up from her bed completely healthy.

This miracle happened on February 7 (new style) 1760. Since that day, a celebration has been celebrated in honor of the icon of the Mother of God « Quench my sorrowS». The compilation of a service with an akathist, first printed in 1862, also dates back to that time.

They made a list from the icon, which was placed in the chapel of the St. Nicholas Church in Pupysh. This temple contained written evidence of numerous miracles performed through the prayers of the Mother of God from Her miraculous image. Especially many miracles occurred during the plague of 1771. This evidence was later destroyed by fire during a fire.

Over time, several more lists were written from the icon «Quench my sorrow». In Moscow, icons of the same name in four churches became famous for their miracles: in the name of St. John the Baptist, on Pokrovka; in the name of the holy apostles Peter and Paul on Novo-Basmannaya; in the name of St. Tikhon of Amafun at the Arbat Gate; in the name of St. Sergius, on Rogozhskaya. In 1765, one miraculous list from the icon was moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg by the merchant Rogovikov. He was in the Church of the Ascension of the Lord.

Nowadays the miraculous icon «Quench my sorrow» is located in the church in the name of St. Nicholas, «what is in Kuznetsy» (Nikolo-Kuznetsky).

In Saratov, in the historical center of the city, there is a temple of remarkable architecture in honor of the icon of the Mother of God «Quench my sorrow». The history of this church began in 1903, when the Saratov architect Pyotr Mitrofanovich Zybin made a design for a church-chapel located at the bishop's house of the Saratov rulers. Its construction soon began and ended in 1906.

The throne of the bishop's temple-chapel was one and was originally consecrated in honor of the Athonite icon of the Mother of God «In sorrows and sorrows Consolation». However, a slightly different name for the church was enshrined in people's memory — « Quench my sorrow».

Until the October Revolution of 1917, services in the chapel were performed daily by the monastic brethren from the bishop's house. During the years of Soviet power, the building, fortunately, was preserved almost in its original form. In the 1960s, by order of the first secretary of the Saratov regional committee, the crosses were removed from the church-chapel, and for a long time the planetarium was located in the temple. However, during restoration back in the Soviet years, the crosses on the domes of the temple were restored.

In 1993, the church was rededicated in honor of the icon of the Mother of God «Quench my sorrow». Currently, the temple has the status of a Bishop's Compound; teachers and students of the Saratov Orthodox Theological Seminary carry out liturgical and clerical obedience there.
