Pentecost among the Lutherans (05/06)

Pentecost — is the birthday of the Christian Church (Acts. 2:1-11). This is the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in the form of tongues of flame, and they began to preach « about the great works of God» (Acts 2:38) in different languages. The Apostle Peter proclaimed that this outpouring of the Spirit marks the advent of a new messianic era (Acts. 2:17-18). Therefore, Pentecost is also called the «apocalyptic day» (that is, the day of the last revelation).

For German Lutherans, Pentecost is traditionally associated with clarifying relationships between lovers. For this purpose, a May tree was installed (in Germany — is common to the entire village). The May Tree was seen as a symbolic form of marriage proposal.

It was usually a tree cut down in the forest, from which branches were cut off and only the green top was left. The trunk was decorated with ribbons, flags, white and red scarves. However, an already installed May tree could have been stolen by a rival or simply local mischievous people, and the right to install it had to be proven with fists. Therefore, the tree was dug deeper and often reinforced with heavy chains.

If the girl did not reciprocate the guy’s feelings, she would throw out an empty basket in response. However, in this case, a sleepless night awaited the girl, since in retaliation her gate could be smeared with tar or leave a pile of garbage and manure, and this was considered a terrible shame. Similarly, eggs thrown at someone's gate on Pentecost night testified to the evil character of the owner of this house and a special dislike for him.
