Day of Missile and Artillery Troops of Armenia (19/10)

On October 19, 1992, the formation of missile and artillery units of the Armed Forces of Armenia was completed. Since then, October 19 has been celebrated in the Republic as the Day of Missile and Artillery Troops, according to the Order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia № 471 dated October 30, 1993.

During Soviet times, the Armenian SSR had well-known military-industrial complex enterprises in the Union, which, according to some estimates, produced up to 40% of the total volume of all-Union production of military electronics. The main types of products were air defense automated control systems («Hrazdanmash»), autonomous power systems for air defense systems («Armelektromash»), various space systems («Galaxy»), electronic systems of various air defense systems («Electron»).

In the 1990s, after Armenia gained independence, production facilities were again created in the country, due to which it became possible to meet the needs of the Armed Forces of the Republic for ammunition for small arms of various calibers and for ammunition for certain types of artillery systems. The production of portable and light mortars and ammunition for them was also established.

Over the past few years, Armenia has significantly strengthened its missile and artillery base. During the parade dedicated to Armenian Independence Day, the country's Armed Forces invariably demonstrate their missile and artillery arsenal. For example, the WM-80W multiple launch rocket systems purchased from China were equipped with new modernized missiles, the range of which was increased to 120 km. The Armenian missile and artillery troops also have AR1A missile and artillery systems (multiple launch rocket systems) and operational-tactical missiles in their arsenal.

Throughout the history of the existence of — during the Great Patriotic War, during the hostilities that took place in subsequent years, during the armed conflicts of —, the Armenian missile and artillery troops acted as a defender and were decisive in strengthening the Armenian national army.

Among the heroic artillerymen of the Great Patriotic War there were many Armenians: among them — Hero of the Soviet Union Suren Akopovich Kasparian, gunner of the 86th Guards Separate Fighter-Anti-Tank Division of the 82nd Guards Rifle Division of the 8th Guards Army of the 1st Belorussian Front.

Currently, on the occasion of the Day of Missile and Artillery Troops, ceremonial events are being held in the army units of this branch of the military with the participation of senior army officials.
